NURTURING YOUR HEROISM: REFLECTING ON PERSONAL ACTS OF BRAVERY

José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda has been recognized as the national hero of our country since the era of Spanish colonial rule. Born on June 19, 1861, he gained renown as a doctor and writer. People are deeply grateful for his heroism in liberating Filipinos during the oppressive Spanish regime.

Among his notable works are the novels "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo." "Noli Me Tangere" portrays the Filipinos who endured insults, belittlement, and political upheavals. The main characters in his novels, including Crisostomo Ibarra, Maria Clara, Padre Damaso, Elias, and Kapitan Tiago, each hold significance. For example, Crisostomo Ibarra symbolizes Rizal's vision for a free and prosperous Philippines, coupled with a dedication to education. "El Filibusterismo" follows, where Crisostomo Ibarra transforms into Simon, representing the oppression faced by Filipinos. Rizal's novels are highly esteemed by Filipinos and are included in the curriculum for students in our time.

Moreover, the historical events in the lives of Filipinos are profoundly meaningful. Through Rizal's writings, he exposes the injustices committed by the Spaniards, with the nation's primary goal being freedom. It is evident that his literary works contributed to overcoming the Spaniards and instilling hope in Filipinos. Jose Rizal Day, celebrated on December 30, commemorates the nation's freedom and Rizal's death in Bagumbayan, Manila.
